Container Fumigation

Shipping containers are an economical and convenient way to transport goods between countries and around the world, so as a preventative measure to protect the goods during transport, fumigating goods inside containers becomes an essential step in eliminating any undetected insect infestations in the goods being transported, and avoiding any potential risk of cross infestation from infested containers.

Container fumigation is carried out using methyl bromide, phosphine gas or Ec02Fume.

Quarantine Authorities worldwide require container fumigation treatments to eliminate the risk of insect pests and disease incursions, and meet their international obligations to ensure that any product being exported to destinations around the world is not only free from pests and diseases, but is also compliant with the importing country's quarantine treatment requirements.

Container fumigation is carried out in two ways as follows.

• Pressure decay fumigation involves the pressure testing of the container to establish its gas tightness by maintaining a nominal pressure value for a given duration of time. If successful, the container is then classified asagas tight container and may be fumigated without the need for any additional sealing to be undertaken.

• Tarpaulin covered fumigation is carried out when the container classified as a non gas tight. The container is covered with a gas proof sheet and sealed with sand snakes around the edges of the sheets to achieve a secure seal to retain the fumigant.
