Quality Inspection of Rice for Trade

"Rice" is an important economic crop in Thailand. It is not only the staple food for over 70 million Thai people but also a significant export product. To ensure that Thai rice remains competitive in the global market and to build consumer confidence both domestically and internationally, maintaining rice quality is essential.

In the rice trade, the quality of rice is a crucial factor in determining its market price. The price of rice depends on its quality, which is assessed based on several criteria:

  1. Moisture Content: The ideal moisture content for rice is 13-15%. Rice with lower moisture content can be sold at a higher price than rice with higher moisture content because it can be milled immediately without incurring additional costs for drying.
  2. Physical Characteristics: These are the external properties of rice grains that can be visually inspected, including color, size, shape, chalkiness, and the glossiness and translucence of the rice.
  3. Milling Quality: This can be evaluated by the proportion of whole grains, head rice, and broken rice. High-quality rice should yield a high percentage of whole grains and head rice with minimal broken rice.
  4. Rice Type: The market demand and consumer preference for specific types of rice, such as Jasmine rice, often command a higher price compared to white rice.
